File Downloads ULRT Report 1. What is ULRF&T? ULRF&T stands for Ultralight Rail Freight and Transit. ULRF&T is an on-demand and point-to-point autonomous rail system. It distributes vehicle load over the length of the guideway by the use of many nimble, lighter weight rail vehicles that can accommodate 6-30 passengers or up to 3 Tons of freight. The lighter weight vehicles and the guideways that support them allow for reduced capital, operating and maintenance costs while providing an enhanced level of service, compared with conventional rail systems. Stations are located off-line and can be incorporated into buildings to provide point-to-point travel without the need for intermediate stops, providing a higher average speed and reducing travel time. Users request vehicles in stations or through a mobile application. Automation allows real-time collation of user requests in order to schedule vehicles on-demand. The system has been tested at speeds up to 60 mph, and will ultimately reach 150 mph. Corridors can be networked together, allowing any vehicle in the system to travel from any station directly to any other station within a network that can be easily expanded to meet the community’s demands and needs. The result provides an environmentally and financially sustainable transportation system. 2. What Does The Track Look Like to A Person Walking By, And For A Person Using The System? The outer dimension (dripline to dripline) of a double track system is 20 ft. This 20-foot guideway can be placed along and/or within existing public-rights-of-way, at-grade, in a trench or tunnel, and/or on... ULTRA-LIGHT RAIL Freight and Transit (ULRF&T) What is it? Studies have indicated that the high capital cost of train systems – passenger rail, commuter rail, light rail, and subways – (often up to $100-200M/mile) is largely caused by vehicle weight. Typical train car weights are from 20 tons/car to as high as 50 tons each and more. Some diesel locomotives may weigh as much as 200 tons. Vehicle weights drive the weight and cost of the tracks and attendant infrastructure – bridges and beams. This track, or guideway as it is also called, comprises the majority of the capital cost of a train system. Based on a systems-engineering analysis conducted by the US Department of Energy, in order to achieve a significant drop in cost, vehicles need to weigh less than 5 tons each. If smaller vehicles are used, the load can be distributed across the guideway, and the cost can go down drastically, 50-90% according to one study. However, if an engineer is needed on every vehicle, the operating costs rise. Modern automation technology used on each vehicle to avoid driving up costs. This enables a system to be built using many smaller vehicles rather than a small number of very heavy trains. The resulting system has a much lower capital cost, and has much greater flexibility of use. For example, many vehicles can have many different destinations, allowing for flexible scheduling. In order to avoid traffic congestion of many smaller vehicles stopped on the main line, vehicles switch... The inventor of CyberTran, Dr. John Dearien, knew that effective public transit is the future of transportation. A senior engineer with the United States Department of Energy (DOE) in Idaho, he had seen first-hand the problems and frustrations associated with typical transit systems. Armed with engineering knowledge, common sense, and the support of both government and the private sector, he set out to design a new transit system from the ground up. His goal was to change the public’s experience with transit by cutting costs and improving convenience, safety, and the overall passenger experience. Collaborating with scientists and engineers at the National Engineering Laboratory in Idaho, Dr. Dearien built the first prototype vehicle for testing. He called his new system “CyberTran,” short for “Cybernetic Transportation. ” The first of several test series focused on the basic system, and later tests became more specific to features such as the proposed guideways and computer controls. After several years of development in Idaho, CyberTran moved to California, where it had closer access to markets that desperately need new solutions to old transit problems. Development continues at CyberTran International’s current facility at the UC Berkeley Richmond Field Station in Richmond, CA. FASTER CyberTran is a direct-to-destination system, meaning that without multiple en-route stops, the vehicle maintains a high average speed and passengers arrive at their destinations up to three times faster than traditional light rail. Since every station is off the main line and the vehicles get to up full speed before rejoining it, there are no delays due to stopped or slowed vehicles. SAFER CyberTran's earthquake-safe elevated guideway keeps tracks away from pedestrians and cars, and its separate lanes for different directions of travel further reduce the opportunity for collisions. Since all vehicles on the guideway are moving at the same speed, the risk of collisions is extremely low. The computer-controlled system monitors the location of each vehicle at all times. Vehicles are equipped with anti-collision sensors, maintaining a safe operating distance between vehicles at all times. CLEANER/GREENER CyberTran is powered by clean electricity through a third rail. The electricity to power the system can be generated by solar panels over the guideway, the stations, and parking lots. CyberTran’s steel wheel on steel rail design is approximately three times more energy efficient than rubber tires on pavement, making the transit system much more energy efficient than rubber-tired vehicles. CyberTran is a minimum construction impact system that does not require continuous ground preparation. It can be installed over many existing structures such as bridges and in highway medians.
